Why Digbeth?

Anyone who has followed my photography over the past year will be well aware of my love for photoshoots in Digbeth, Birmingham. The stunning street art, the vibrant colours, the twinkly lights – it’s all a recipe for a perfect engagement shoot in Digbeth. Living so close to Birmingham (just an hour up the road) means I can really take advantage of this beautiful, urban location that has become one of my favourite places to take my lovely couples and clients.

iT STARTED As an engagement shoot in Digbeth

When Anna got in touch asking about a couples shoot I was so excited. As soon as she mentioned that they were Birmingham-based and were looking for a ‘street photos’ vibe, I knew exactly where we had to go. Choosing Digbeth was easy and I knew we’d get some great shots!

What happened next blew my mind….

A little surprise…

I always message my couples when I arrive as I often won’t have met them before. In Anna’s reply she told me ‘you can’t miss us’… well wasn’t that the truth! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw them across the car park – they both looked utterly incredible! They explained to me that they were getting secretly married in January in an intimate ceremony and wanted to use the photos from our session as their announcement. I couldn’t have been more excited! We were totally ready to do this!

Let the fun begin!

We spent the next hour hitting all the best spots around Digbeth; the Custard Factory, Gibb Street, and Floodgate Street outside the awesome Red Brick Market. It’s almost impossible not to look ridiculously cool walking around there, especially when you are dressed like Anna and Stuart! Anna’s dreamy wedding dress was from this Etsy store, while Stuart’s suit was from Next, and paired with his dad’s stylish vintage tie.

We took full advantage of the moments of sunshine in amongst the clouds – we were so lucky and I LOVED how the sunlight made Anna’s dress look almost ethereal and so damn sparkly! And let’s just take a moment for how damn dapper Stuart looked in his suit…

A dance in Gibb Street

Our photoshoot was in December, so we were lucky to make the most of the twinkly lights along Gibb Street, which is right by the Custard Factory. As Anna and Stuart weren’t necessarily going to have the traditional first dance, they just had to do it here (with only a little coercing by me!) To say I’m obsessed with these images wouldn’t be an overexaggeration…

The Street art

We definitely took advantage of the STUNNING street art in Digbeth! The colours are the perfect backdrop for shenanigans and I love that my edit makes them really pop. We made sure we found Stuart’s favourite piece to shoot in front of and create some fun (and funny!) memories.

Ending our engagement shoot in digbeth

When doing an engagement shoot in Digbeth, we tend to take a tour in one big circle around the streets and finish up almost where we started. We had to take advantage of the gorgeous arched bridge for a few final shots. This also gave us a beautiful silhouette to end with.

I’m Gem! A tattooed, metal music loving, non-traditional wedding photographer who understands the importance of capturing authentic moments alongside utter carnage!!

I’m a mum of two very excitable boys, Elijah and Axel, who definitely keep me on my toes! I live with my husband Michael, the boys, one black cat and four fish in our beautiful house that I’m constantly finding new ways of decorating (mostly with skulls and blackjack Frenchic paint).

I’m a hopeless romantic and a sucker for a good film – Princess Bride, True Romance, Beautiful Creatures and Warm Bodies are up there. Though don’t ask me to pick a favourite – with my indecisiveness I’d probably chose something totally different.
